The more she learns about her history and current states, the tougher her thoughts towards white people grow. She starts researching the reasons and racism in her state, and learns of NAACP from her teacher, despite her mother’s warnings. A black boy is tortured and killed by white people for whistling flirtatiously towards a white woman, and Moody is left shocked. When Moody begins high school, so does her interest and fight for rights for the colored. Yet, she continues living a somewhat blissful life during the years of grade school. Anne Moody understands that there is a difference between the white and black people early on as she grows up in the town. Moody grew up on a farm with her family, as they were poor sharecroppers, before they move into a town in order for her to begin school. McEwan's works have earned him worldwide critical acclaim. Ian McEwan studied at the University of Sussex, where he received a BA degree in English Literature in 1970 and later received his MA degree in English Literature at the University of East Anglia. On Chesil Beach is another masterwork from McEwan-a story of lives transformed by a gesture not made or a word not spoken. Ian McEwan has caught with understanding and compassion the innocence of Edward and Florence at a time when marriage was presumed to be the outward sign of maturity and independence. Edward, eager for rapture, frets over Florence’s response to his advances and nurses a private fear of failure, while Florence’s anxieties run deeper: she is overcome by sheer disgust at the idea of physical contact, but dreads disappointing her husband when they finally lie down together in the honeymoon suite. At dinner in their rooms they struggle to suppress their worries about the wedding night to come. Newly married that morning, both virgins, Edward and Florence arrive at a hotel on the Dorset coast. Florence is a talented musician who dreams of a career on the concert stage and of the perfect life she will create with Edward, an earnest young history student at University College of London, who unexpectedly wooed and won her heart. The five-day trip out to Idaho when I was twelve had a powerful effect on me: what a huge and amazing country! I had no idea then that thirty-some years later, I would recreate that trip in a book called Walk Two Moons. We must have been a very noisy bunch, and I'm not sure how our parents put up with being cooped up with us in the car for those trips. In the summer, we usually took a trip, all of us piled in a car and heading out to Wisconsin or Michigan or, once, to Idaho. (In that book, the brothers even have the same names as my own brothers.) Our house was not only full of us Creeches, but also full of friends and visiting relatives. More than the hunt for Julie’s killer, the novel is about the lives of the women Felix left behind. No one seems overly concerned about who had killed Julie and why, but Sanchez is the classic dogged detective, who won’t rest until he finds justice for a victim no one cares about. Fast forward twenty six years and retired detective Roberto “Sandy” Sanchez is investigating the case of Julie’s death. Everyone assumes she’s gone to join Felix, but her body is discovered in a secluded park a few days later. Ten years after Felix disappears, his mistress Julie goes missing. If this sounds like a story ripped from the headlines, that’s because it is: the novel is inspired by the true story of Julius Salsbury, the head of a large gambling operation in Baltimore in the 1970s.
